Your Summer Wealth Checklist: 5 Moves to Make Before July

Summer isn’t just for beach trips, BBQs, and catching up on that one show you’ve been meaning to binge.

It’s also one of the best times to reset your financial goals and set yourself up for a strong Q3.

Let’s be real—by the time July rolls around, most people have:

  • Forgotten their New Year money goals,
  • Slipped out of their budgeting habits, or
  • Told themselves “I’ll start again in the fall.”

But not you. Not this time.

Let’s get ahead of it.

Here are 5 smart money moves to make before July—especially if you’re ready to move from financial stress to summer success:

1. Check In on Your Savings Rate (and Don’t Just Hoard It)

Ask yourself:
“Have I saved at least 10% of what I’ve earned so far this year?”
If not, this is your cue to pause and realign.

But let me be clear—when I say “savings rate,” I don’t mean shoving every dollar into a savings account and calling it wealth-building. That’s not it.

Here’s how I break it down:

  • ✅ Start with your emergency fund (3–6 months of essential expenses)
  • ✅ Then build sinking funds for things you know are coming—car repairs, back-to-school, travel, holiday gifts
  • ✅ Then invest the rest—your Roth IRA, a high-yield savings account for short-term goals, or a brokerage account for long-term growth

I’ll be honest: I got stuck here for a while. After paying off $130K in debt, I was so proud—and so scared. I started hoarding cash out of fear because I didn’t want to lose what I had finally built. But eventually, I had to shift my mindset from survivor to wealth builder. And that required taking smart, calculated risks through investing—not just saving.

So if you’re under that 10% mark, ask yourself:

  • Can I cut back in one area to catch up?
  • Am I saving with purpose—or just out of fear?
  • Is my money actually working for me?

This reset right here? It can change your entire second half of the year.

2. Schedule a 30-Minute Money Date

Whether it’s solo or with your partner, this one is powerful.

Set aside 30 minutes (put it in your calendar!) and review:

  • What you’ve spent
  • What’s coming up
  • Where your debt payoff or savings stands

This simple check-in can help you make better choices and feel less overwhelmed about money.

Light a candle. Put on a playlist. Make it a vibe. Money doesn’t have to feel heavy—it can be an act of self-care.

3. Reevaluate Your Subscriptions

This one’s quick but impactful.
Log into your accounts and take a hard look:
→ Are you using that app?
→ Do you really need all 3 streaming services right now?
→ Is that $9.99 coming out every month for something you forgot about?

Cut the clutter and redirect that money toward something that actually moves the needle—like your savings goals, a debt payment, or even your joy fund (more on that next 👇🏽).

4. Set a Summer “Joy Budget”

Fun is not the enemy of financial freedom.
You are allowed to enjoy your money—just do it on purpose.

Set up a summer joy fund.
→ Want to try a new rooftop spot in town? Budget for it.
→ Road trip with friends? Budget for it.
→ Self-care Sundays with brunch and a facial? Budget for it.

Being disciplined with your money doesn’t mean you never enjoy it.
It means you plan for the enjoyment instead of regretting it later.

5. Automate Your Next Investment

Whether it’s your Roth IRA, 401(k), or high-yield savings—set it and forget it.

If there’s one thing that changed the game for me, it was automating my wealth-building habits.

I used to think I had to wait until I had “extra” to invest—but y’all, extra rarely shows up unless you plan for it.
Even $50/month automated adds up over time. And you’ll be surprised how quickly that momentum builds.
