Why You’re Not Building Wealth (and What to Do About It)
A lot of people think the key to building wealth is just making more money. And I get it—more money can definitely help. But let me be real with you: that’s not usually the biggest thing standing between you and financial freedom.
So what is?
Your mindset.
Most of us are stuck not because we’re lazy or unmotivated or bad with money. We’re stuck because no one ever taught us how to think about money in a way that builds real, long-term wealth.
I know this personally.
After I paid off over $130,000 of debt in a little over two years, I should’ve felt unstoppable, right? But what actually happened was… I got stuck. I moved into the next phase—saving—but I was scared to move beyond that. Scared to invest. Scared to take risks. I had worked so hard to dig myself out of that hole that I didn’t want to mess it up.
So I started hoarding my money. Not in an empowering way. In a fearful, “what if I lose it” kind of way.
And that’s when I realized: my habits had changed, but my mindset hadn’t caught up.
I was no longer just a woman trying to get out of debt—I was stepping into becoming a wealth builder. But my thoughts were still playing small. Still stuck in survival mode. Still trying to avoid risk instead of strategically embracing it.
And that’s what so many people go through without even realizing it.
We hustle. We cut back. We save.
But then we freeze when it’s time to invest.
Or grow.
Or build something bigger.
Because we’re still thinking like the old version of ourselves.
So what needs to change?
Your money mindset.
Here are three powerful mindset shifts that helped me—and that can help you move from stuck to stacking:
1. Replace fear with clarity.
Avoiding your bank account doesn’t protect you—it just keeps you powerless.
For a long time, I would tell myself “I don’t need to look at that right now.” But the truth is, when you avoid your numbers, you can’t control them.
Once I started sitting down regularly, tracking what was coming in, what was going out, and what wasn’t aligned with my goals—I felt empowered. Because now I knew what I was working with.
Clarity gives you control. It puts you back in the driver’s seat.
2. Stop glorifying struggle.
Listen, I’m all for being proud of the grind it took to get here—but at some point, we have to stop thinking that barely getting by is noble. It’s not.
You are allowed to want overflow. You are allowed to want wealth. You are allowed to want peace.
There is no shame in saying, “I want more.”
→ More time.
→ More options.
→ More for your family.
→ More for your future.
Wealth isn’t just about numbers in a bank account. It’s about freedom. It’s about being able to say “yes” to the things that matter and “no” to what doesn’t.
And that requires us to stop playing small just because struggle feels familiar.
3. Think like an investor, not a spender.
This is where I had to grow the most.
After paying off debt and building up savings, I thought I was winning. And I was! But if your money is just sitting in a savings account, afraid to go out and work for you—you’re not building wealth. You’re just…waiting.
I had to rewire how I thought about risk.
Wealth builders understand that every dollar needs a job. Whether that’s investing in the market, a business, real estate, or even a coach or mentor—money needs movement.
If you’re always thinking, “Can I afford this right now?” instead of, “Will this help me grow long-term?” you’re thinking like a spender.
And that mindset will keep you broke—even with a high income.
I’ve seen real people—myself included—completely shift their financial trajectory in just months.
Not because they got a raise.
Not because they started a six-figure business overnight.
But because they changed how they saw money—and started acting from that new perspective.
And guess what? You can too.
